CONTACTING ORGANISATIONS
An example of an introductory letter to organisations by ETSC, Iceland
Theme: Introduction on the project Workplace guidance /Career counseling in the workplace
In the beginning of the year X and by the initiative of X the project Workplace guidance/ Career counseling in the workplace was launched. Employee X takes care of the coordination in cooperation with career counsellors at Mímir-símenntun Life Long Learning Centre.
The target group of this project are X. Those who have not completed any formal educational level are a special target group. The main objective is to motivate members to seek education or courses with the aim of strengthening their personal skills, employability skills and/or enhance in general the quality of their lives. Participation in the project is without cost both for the organisations as well as for the employees.
Procedure:
(NB it‘s possible to tailormake the procedure to organisation‘s needs and situation).
1. Introductory meeting with employees in the worktime (30 min.).
It‘s preferable that as many employees as possible get the opportunity to attend this introductory meeting. (NB: Having those meetings in the morning before the shops/workplace open has turned out to be successful).
Agenda:
a) Introduction on the value of lifelong/continuing learning and the role of a career counsellor (20 min.).
b) Introduction of the educational fund X which provides funding for educational and leisure courses as well as funding for travelling (5 min).
After the introduction, employees, if they wish, can register for an individual counselling interview with a career counsellor.
2. Individual counselling interview with a career counsellor.
The interviews will be held several days after the introductory meeting at the workplace. Decisions on time and arrangement will be made in cooperation with managers or other contact at the workplace. The duration of each interview is approx. 30-40 min.
The main goal of the interviews is to give employees individual assistance for example to figure out their current situation, explore possiblities for courses and educational paths, set their own goals and make a plan for their next step.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A growing emphasize is laid on educational and career counseling as a way to enhance people‘s participation in lifelong learning both in Iceland as well as abroad. By creating the flexibility for employees to participate in this project, organisations are providing service which until now has not been accessible for people in the labour market. Organisations‘ own benefits should for example be increased competence and wellbeeing at the workplace as well as a better quality of the lives of their employees.
During this year X organisations and companies within the Capital area have held introductory meetings and almost X individuals have attended those meetings. Around half of them have accepted an offer of a following individual counselling interview.
With best regards, xxx xxx
